School Edible Gardens
On May 18th 70 volunteers from Capital one volunteered at FRIENDS association for children in Gilpin Court and installed edible shrubs and fruit trees (juneberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, elderberry, bush cherry, figs, asian pear, serviceberry, pomegranate etc…) continuing the work from the May 2010 edible landscape design Nina Zinn created. Capital One donated the funding to purchase the fruit trees and edible shrubs. It was an amazing effort with coordination through Capital One-Carver Evans, Shellie Smith with FRIENDS and Nina Zinn of Urban Backyard Edibles. There are plans to complete the Virginia Natives plants garden as well as the butterfly garden later this year making Nina Zinn’s vision for FRIENDS playground complete.
