Welcome to the online home of
Urban Backyard Edibles!

Urban Backyard Edibles is a locally owned and operated business, located in the heart of the Museum District of Richmond. Since the start of the business in February of 2011, Urban Backyard Edibles has beenteaching the community to grow their own food in a way that draws from the historical concept of sustainable sensibility. We specialize in the design, installation and maintenance of edible gardens. Our focus is on allowing each and every person to be able to grow their own food in a simple, sustainable and aesthetic way.

From the earliest human civilizations to the Victory Gardens of World War II, home gardens are nothing new. But the World War II vets are aging, and their children grew up in a time when pre-packaged food and TV dinners were all the rage. And while people are just now starting to revive the historic home vegetable gardens and sustainability principals, we somehow missed a generation! And that’s where Urban Backyard Edibles comes in. Our business helps people eliminate all of the research and know-how about growing food that their parents would have passed on. And we help the new generation of people to re-learn the significance of sustainability, food security, frugality, and good old fashioned hard work!

Grow healthy food. Eat healthy food.
Live a happy and healthy life!

Urban Backyard Edibles is fortunate to have come onto the scene just as Richmond was getting interested in the local and “Slow Food” movement. The business takes local and slow food to the next level by allowing people to grow edibles in their own backyard. So the client’s food is, by definition, local. The principals of the slow food movement, in its broad scope, are also a major part of how UBE operates. All of our pest control products, fertilizer and soil are naturally derived, sustainable, and healthy for the earth. None of our methods are incongruous with long-term sustainability. The practice of gardening itself beckons a reconnection with the earth, family, traditions, nutrition. These cornerstone concepts of the slow food movement are also close our hearts here at UBE.

Don’t forget that many of these services are highly customizable. Many of our clients are local businesses that want to add something special to their setup, whether it’s some aesthetically pleasing as well as functional accents to a senior living facility, or a rooftop beehive or garden for restaurants that want to highlight their focus on fresh, local ingredients. We can also customize your raised beds to be handicapped accessible and ergonomically designed. As urban gardeners ourselves, we have come to understand and appreciate the frustrations of gardening in the city. For this reason, we offer rooftop gardens (certified by LiveRoof), potted gardens, and vertical gardens for those with limited lighting or space.
